Qanatir Al-Khairiya

Qanatir Al-Khairiya is one of the cities of Qalyubia Governorate, and the point at which the Nile divides into the Rosetta and Damietta branches. It takes its name from the barrages built there by Muhammad Ali Pasha, which control the flow of water to the three main canals in the Nile Delta — Menoufi, Tawfiqi and Buhairi.

The city is characterised by very large areas of gardens and parks and is considered one of the most important crossings to the middle of the Delta, about 20 km from Cairo.

A defect appeared in some of the Qanatir Al-Khairiya eyes in 1867 due to water pressure. Khedive Ismail directed his attention to remedying it and entrusted the task to the leading engineers of his time: Mogil Bey, Bahgat Pasha and Mazhar Pasha, and then the English engineer Mr. Fuller, who accomplished the reform during the reign of Khedive Ismail.
