Sultan Hassan Mosque

The Sultan Hassan Mosque and Madrasa is among the largest and tallest mosques in Egypt. It was built by Sultan Hassan bin Al-Nasir Muhammad bin Qalawun between 757 AH / 1356 AD and 765 AH / 1363 AD, and stands at the end of Muhammad Ali Street opposite Al-Rifa'i Mosque in Salah El-Din Square.

The historian Al-Maqrizi noted in his writings on the mosque's construction that the epidemics affecting the population at the time prevented its completion. The total cost of the project exceeded one million dinars.

Like most Islamic landmarks in Cairo, the mosque underwent numerous restoration and reconstruction campaigns across the centuries up to the twentieth.
