Al-Aqbaghawiya Madrasa, Al-Azhar

The Aqbaghawiya Madrasa was annexed to the architecture of Al-Azhar Mosque during the Mamluk era and is among the most famous of its attached schools. It was founded by Prince Aqbagha Abdul Wahid.

Its importance derives from its connection to Al-Azhar; it represented the jewel of the neighbouring schools, standing at the northern side of the mosque by the great western gate. Throughout its history the madrasa attracted students of knowledge and became known among the residents of Mamluk Cairo for teaching and disseminating learning, drawing students from across Egypt to study the Shafi'i and Hanafi schools of jurisprudence.

The madrasa suffered the effects of time until Khedive Ismail ordered its restoration and renewal. It was restored again in 2022–2023.
