Monastery of St. Anthony

The Monastery of St. Anthony is among the oldest monasteries in Egypt and the world, its founding dating to the late third and early fourth century AD.

St. Anthony established the monastery in a cave within the mountain and built above it in the Eastern Desert, in one of the Red Sea mountain ranges near Zaafarana, within the jurisdiction of Ras Ghareb.

The monastery contains ten churches, and most of its structures are built of unfired mud brick.
